2022 marked a full LNG turnaround for Elenger

In 2022, Elenger switched the gas supply of its customers in the Baltic and Finnish regions to LNG-based gas. Starting from the spring it procured five shiploads of LNG through the Klaipeda terminal in Lithuania.

“The past year freed gas from pipe-based constraints – gas now comes to us by sea from the West, mainly from Norway and the United States. The next gas tanker we have ordered will arrive in Klaipeda in mid-January,” said Margus Kaasik, the manager of Elenger group.

“When the new supply routes get in place and the new LNG infrastructure together with the ports is completed, it will start to bring down the gas price in our region and expand the use of gas again – gas would help increase the competitiveness of our industry and accelerate the development of hydrogen technologies, in addition, gas can be used for the production of electricity in order to support wind and solar energy in covering peak loads,” said Kaasik.

Five large LNG ships delivered gas to Elenger customers in 2022. The gas tanker Aristidis I from the United States arrived at the Lithuanian Klaipeda terminal in May, Diamond Gas Crystal from the United States and Arctic Princess from Norway in June, Isabella from the United States in October, and Arctic Aurora from Norway in November.

Elenger started using the small LNG terminal in Klaipeda, Lithuania already in 2017. In 2019, an agreement was signed with Klaipeda Nafta, after which the purchase of LNG through the Klaipeda Independence floating terminal and injection to the natural gas network began. In addition, the company has been supplying LNG with trucks for bunkering ships and to off-grid industrial customers for many years.

Elenger offers customers natural gas in the form of pipeline gas, compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) and manages the largest gas network in Estonia. The company is actively engaged in international energy trade, develops a renewable energy portfolio in the form of solar energy and biomethane production and sales.

Elenger operates in Finland, the Baltic states and Poland. The group has a total of 50,000 customers. After the company was acquired by Infortar, one of Estonia’s largest investment companies, Elenger has grown into the region’s largest privately owned energy company. In homeland Estonia the company is known under Eesti Gaas brand name.
